The Math Competition is intended to combine the techniques of Socratic teaching with the fiercely competitive spirit of the Olympic Games, or contests in their original and healthy spirit. The winners, namely the top five, are then awarded prizes ranging from US $100 dollars for faith place to US $1,000 dollars for first place.

The next step in the development of the Math Competition is planned as a contest between the two leading teams from, say, Napa and Sonoma for a grand prize of US $5,000 dollars, with each team to consist of five students working under one teacher. We plan to schedule this event as soon as the students have reached an appropriate level of proficiency and ease in the art of mathematical problem solving.

To help them reach this level of proficiency, as rapidly as possible, we are initiating a Second Program. This is designed to assist the math clubs, which our teachers have formed and to which they generously give their time. Teachers who enroll their math clubs in this program will receive a set of ten questions at the end of every month. The student who does the best in each club will receive an award of US $25 dollars with a parallel prize awarded to the teacher.

At the close of a year a slightly longer set of problems will be given and the winning student, from the clubs as a whole, will receive an award of US $500 dollars, with a parallel prize in recognition of his or her extra work.

An additional feature of this program will be an award made to the club which has shown the most vigor in attracting the most diverse group in terms of race, ethnicity and gender.
